I work with students at all levels of high school math, from Algebra I to Calculus BC. Taking an interactive, conversational approach, I help my students to gain a deeper understanding of the concepts they’re learning and to develop effective study habits. In the short term, I aim to help my students find greater success on homework, quizzes, and tests. Over time, I want my students to feel more and more confident that they can continue to learn and master new math concepts, even as those concepts become more abstract or complex.
I know math can be challenging for a wide variety of reasons, and I meet my students wherever they are on their journey. Here are some common challenges I encounter:
Missing understanding of foundational concepts from past classes
A longstanding belief that one is “bad at math”
Difficulty with the pace of classroom instruction or with a particular teacher’s style
A feeling of being lost in one’s current math class
Avoidance of practice
Test-taking anxiety
Overlooking details and making small errors
Doing well in class but looking for better conceptual understanding
Whatever a student’s situation might be, my goal is to tune in to their unique needs and learning styles. We move at whatever pace is right for them to gain a solid grasp of the topic — to experience that “I get it!” feeling. We also welcome states of confusion or uncertainty, recognizing that these moments can be the precursors to gaining new understanding.
Most commonly, I meet my students for 60 or 90 minutes, once or twice per week, throughout their school year. It’s over this longer term that I can most effectively help my students become more confident math learners and more capable test-takers.
I also provide math tutoring on a more limited basis, for example in preparation for a test. This tends to be most effective for a student who is mostly keeping up and doing well in their math class, but who may be struggling with a particularly challenging concept or unit.
